How Does Geothermal Heating Work?

Geothermal technology is an environmentally friendly way to provide total home comfort using the temperate air below the earth’s crust for heating in the winter months and cooling when it’s warm outside. Even just feet below the surface, the temperature is consistently between 50 – 60 degrees Fahrenheit, making geothermal the sustainable energy source of the future. 

Geothermal heating can be used for both homes and businesses and is easily achieved with a geothermal heat pump. Basically, the cold air inside is exchanged for the warmer air below the earth’s surface using a ground heat exchanger.

Types of Geothermal Systems

There are three basic types of geothermal installations:

• Horizontal: Typically the most affordable option for homeowners, if there’s enough land available for installation. Basically, two pipes are required and can be arranged next to each other in a five feet deep trench or in two trenches, at depths of six feet and four feet, respectively. A method of coiling pipe is used to allow more pipe to be laid in a smaller geographical area.
• Vertical: Holes are drilled at a depth ranging from 100 to 400 feet approximately 20 feet apart. The pipes are inserted with a u-shaped bend at the bottom and connected by a horizontal pipe, which connects to the heat pump inside the structure.
• Pond/Lake: A great alternative if there is a sufficient water source available in the proper size and type. The supply pipe is placed underground from the structure to the water. It’s coiled at least eight feet under the water’s surface to avoid freezing.
